Toronto's Shoreline Under Construction123456789101112
Toronto’s waterfront looks permanent, but much of the ground beneath this walk was once lake, marsh or shallow harbour. This tour reveals how dredging, landfill, seawalls, railways and industrial planning steadily pushed the city south into Lake Ontario. Starting with visible stormwater engineering at Sherbourne Common, you will pass an active sugar refinery, the former headquarters of harbour planners and warehouses adapted for new uses. Farther west, locomotives, artificial beaches, a constructed wetland and monumental grain silos show how transportation, industry, recreation and ecology have repeatedly competed for the same shoreline. The walk is ideal for urban-history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, railway fans and anyone curious about how cities manufacture their edges. Finish above the active rail corridor at Puente de Luz, where Toronto’s old transportation barrier and its high-density redevelopment can be understood in a single sweeping view.

Follow the granite channels and Jill Anholt’s sculptural Light Showers to see how infrastructure, flood resilience and public space now work together.
