Tracks Through Neve Tzedek1234567891011
Neve Tzedek feels intimate today, but its narrow lanes hold an ambitious urban story. This walk begins with founders who built a Jewish neighborhood beyond crowded Jaffa decades before Tel Aviv formally appeared, then introduces the organizers, writers, teachers, and entertainers who gave the new quarter a civic and cultural identity. Along the way, handsome homes share the streets with a pioneering cinema, literary landmarks, and former schools reborn as the Suzanne Dellal Centre. These places reveal preservation as an active process rather than a frozen picture: neglected structures became museums, galleries, performance spaces, cafés, and some of the city’s most desirable property. The railway provides the route’s dramatic thread. At Chelouche Bridge, its former cutting remains a physical boundary; at Park HaMesila, that same alignment becomes public space. The walk culminates at HaTachana, where platforms, freight buildings, and industrial architecture explain how trains moved not only travelers but also the materials used to construct a modern city. This tour is ideal for architecture lovers, urban-history fans, railway enthusiasts, and anyone curious about how cities reinvent old infrastructure. It offers a compact journey through Tel Aviv’s beginnings without leaving Neve Tzedek and the historic railway corridor immediately beside it.

Abulafia House

A modest attic links Neve Tzedek’s lanes to Nobel laureate S. Y. Agnon.

In 1908, the young writer later known as S. Y. Agnon rented an attic room in this family house. The surrounding lanes, filled with immigrants, teachers, merchants, and Hebrew intellectuals, fed his imagination. Look upward rather than expecting a museum: the literary story hides in the building’s domestic scale.
