Concrete Streets of Split 3123456789101112
Split 3 is far more than a collection of imposing concrete blocks. Conceived after a landmark 1968 planning competition, it was designed as a complete piece of city where housing, schools, commerce, recreation, and public life could flourish without every journey revolving around a car. The walk moves between the sculptural megastructure of Gripe, layered Koteks terraces, intimate residential lanes, the animated Ruđera Boškovića spine, and everyday institutions such as the neighborhood market. Along the way, narrow passages, shaded courts, frequent entrances, and sudden openings reveal how planners Vladimir Mušič, Marjan Bežan, and Nives Starc reinterpreted the spatial logic of older Dalmatian towns. Later stops show how the district continued to evolve. University buildings extend its civic ambitions, while altered shopfronts, enclosed balconies, plants, and resident-given nicknames record decades of post-socialist adaptation. Krstarica and Kineski Zid are monumental from a distance, yet deeply domestic when experienced at walking pace. This tour is ideal for architecture enthusiasts, urbanists, photographers, and curious travelers who want to see a lived-in side of Split beyond the historic center. Expect concrete drama, lively markets, shaded pedestrian routes, uneven surfaces, and a neighborhood whose greatest achievement is still its everyday life.
