Břevnov Brews: Monks, Malt, and Taverns12345678
This walk begins at Břevnov Monastery, where beer belongs to a much larger story of grain, water, gardens, storage, labor, and hospitality. The Baroque setting is beautiful, but the focus stays firmly on how a working religious community fed guests and sustained itself. After exploring the spring, former granary, brewery, and monastery tavern, follow Bělohorská into residential Břevnov. Here, Czech lager becomes everyday social infrastructure: a carefully maintained tap, a quick lunch, familiar regulars, and a shared table rather than a grand tourist spectacle. The route then climbs toward Strahov for a comparison between two modern monastic-site breweries. It finishes at U Černého vola, where dark wood, wet foam, direct service, and communal seating distill the traditional Prague beer-hall experience to its essentials. This tour suits curious drinkers, food lovers, social historians, and travelers who want to understand Prague beyond castles and legends. Sample responsibly, alternate beer with water and food, and use the nearby trams if the hills or tastings make the full walk uncomfortable.

Vojtěška Pavilion

A shaded Baroque spring reveals water’s essential role in monastic brewing.

Tucked into the monastery garden, this Baroque pavilion shelters a spring associated with Saint Adalbert. Rather than chasing legends, consider the practical value of dependable water for kitchens, orchards, washing, and brewing. Damp stone, birdsong, and leafy paths make this a refreshing introduction to the monastery’s carefully managed landscape.
