Montmartre Rebels After Dark123456789101112
Montmartre is often presented as a charming hill of painters and postcard views, but its real story is far more unruly. This walk follows performers, political rebels, filmmakers, illustrators, and impoverished artists who repeatedly challenged respectable Paris—and then watched their rebellion become a marketable legend. Beginning at Place des Abbesses, you will move between makeshift studios, vanished cabarets, a pioneering cinema, and the Moulin Rouge’s spectacular red windmill. Along the way, paintings and posters become evidence of how popular entertainment, radical art, celebrity, and publicity fed one another. The climb toward Sacré-Cœur shifts the focus to the Paris Commune. Square Louise-Michel, the basilica, the Chevalier de La Barre monument, and the former rue des Rosiers reveal a summit contested by revolutionaries, conservative Catholics, secular republicans, and later generations of tourists. The route finishes among museum studios and the living cabaret tradition of Au Lapin Agile. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy art, performance, political history, and the slippery boundary between authentic memory and carefully manufactured mythology.

Place des Abbesses

Enter Montmartre through its lively former village center and bohemian gateway.

Begin where independent Montmartre once maintained its own civic identity before joining Paris in 1860. The sloping streets, musicians, and Art Nouveau Metro entrance set up a recurring theme: much of “old Montmartre” is authentic, but some of its most beloved imagery was carefully relocated, restored, or reinvented.
