Mount Royal’s Forest Reveals1234567
This is Mount Royal as a designed journey rather than a quick trip to a viewpoint. Starting at the Peel entrance, you leave the city abruptly and climb through rock, roots and dense canopy toward Montréal’s most famous panorama. Along the way, the direct staircases provide a striking contrast with Frederick Law Olmsted’s gently curving road. You will see how he used movement, changing vegetation and delayed views to make a modest mountain feel expansive, then discover how later landmarks and recreation reshaped his vision. The route also explores the mountain as a living urban forest. Erosion controls, regeneration plots and managed deadwood reveal conservation in action, while Kondiaronk’s story and Épisode add Indigenous diplomacy and modern Québécois art to the landscape. Nature lovers, design enthusiasts, photographers and curious walkers will all find something memorable here. The climb is demanding, but the progression from steep escarpment to wooded summit and open water makes every section feel like a new landscape.

Peel Entrance

A dramatic city-to-forest threshold begins Mount Royal’s steepest and most revealing approach.

At Peel and Docteur-Penfield, city traffic quickly fades behind stone, trees and climbing paths. This steep entrance differs from Olmsted’s preferred gradual routes, making it a useful introduction to his ideas. Notice how the narrowing staircase and disappearing skyline make Mount Royal feel larger, wilder and farther from Montréal than it really is.
