Mills and Rapids of Abbotsford123456789
This walk follows the Yarra through one of inner Melbourne’s clearest sequences of changing land use. On Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country, waterways that long supported movement, food and culture were later harnessed, polluted, engineered and gradually reclaimed as public and ecological spaces. Begin among industrial landmarks, from Little Audrey’s animated neon to a brewery that still operates at metropolitan scale. Former textile mills then reveal the immense factory floors, divided labour and water-dependent production that once shaped working Abbotsford. At Abbotsford Convent and Collingwood Children’s Farm, the story shifts to institutional agriculture, domestic industry and the labour of women and girls. Monumental architecture, productive river flats and laundry histories show that this attractive landscape also carries difficult memories of discipline and confinement. The finale belongs to Dights Falls, where roaring water, mill archaeology and a modern fishway bring extraction and ecological repair together. This is an ideal walk for history lovers, industrial-heritage enthusiasts and anyone curious about how an urban river can be workplace, power source, farm boundary and living habitat at once.

Skipping Girl Sign

Animated neon preserves the playful public face of Abbotsford’s manufacturing past.

Little Audrey skips above Victoria Street, recalling the vinegar factory she once advertised. The original sign appeared during Melbourne’s manufacturing boom; today’s reconstruction keeps its animated sequence alive. It is a cheerful introduction to the walk’s central idea: factories can disappear while fragments of their identity remain embedded in the streetscape.
