Chasing Neon Ghosts Along Galiano12345678910
This walk reveals a Havana written in curves, marquees, rooftop emblems, and the scars of vanished signs. Along Galiano and San Rafael, commercial architecture once competed for attention with illuminated names, lavish windows, movie posters, and crowds dressed for an evening out. You will move between major landmarks and quieter fragments: Teatro América’s streamlined sweep, Fausto’s vertical beacon, Cinecito’s miniature movie-house frontage, and the corporate glamour of Edificio Bacardí. Sloppy Joe’s adds reconstructed nightlife, while La Época recalls the department store as a stage for modern consumption. Some of the most affecting stops are absences. Parque Fe del Valle replaces the lost El Encanto department store, while Parque El Curita occupies the former Plaza del Vapor. Historic images help these open spaces recover their vanished density, connecting glamorous retail with market workers, transit, and everyday commerce. Architecture lovers, cinema fans, photographers, and curious urban explorers will find plenty to examine. The route remains rewarding even when interiors are closed and neon stays dark, because Havana’s old entertainment culture still survives in typography, balconies, brackets, blank panels, and the street’s restless energy.

Edificio Bacardí

Havana’s lavish Art Deco tower turns corporate architecture into monumental advertising.

Completed in 1930 as Bacardí’s headquarters, this polychrome Art Deco tower makes branding architectural. Glazed terracotta, geometric metalwork, rich stone, and bat motifs reward close inspection, while the rooftop bat turns the skyline into a giant company emblem. Step back across Monserrate to appreciate its theatrical vertical rise.
