Calvin’s Geneva: Walls and Power123456789101112
Geneva’s Old Town is more than a handsome hilltop district. Its steep lanes, stripped churches, council chambers and former defenses reveal how a medieval city became a disciplined Protestant republic whose influence traveled across Europe. The walk begins in a neighborhood temple before climbing the atmospheric Degrés-de-Poules. Around St. Pierre, you will enter Calvin’s teaching hall, descend through ancient cathedral foundations and explore the international networks of printers, refugees and reformers that made Geneva intellectually powerful. Narrow Rue Jean-Calvin and Maison Tavel bring the story down to human scale, while the Ancien Arsenal and Hôtel de Ville expose the weapons and institutions behind republican independence. The route then opens onto the Treille, where former defenses became a leafy public promenade. Finish at the Reformation Wall, a monumental and deliberately selective version of Protestant history. This tour is ideal for curious travelers who enjoy architecture, political ideas, hidden passages and close reading of cities rather than general sightseeing.

Temple de la Madeleine

A neighborhood church revealing how reform transformed worship beyond Geneva’s cathedral.

Begin where reform reached ordinary Genevans. Preachers including Guillaume Farel used neighborhood churches like this one to challenge Catholic worship and place vernacular sermons at the center of communal life. Inside, subdued light, bare stone and restrained decoration capture the striking shift from medieval parish church to Reformed temple.
