Lost Turrets of Fukuoka Castle12345678910
Fukuoka Castle is an adventure in reading what is no longer there. Built for Kuroda Nagamasa after the Battle of Sekigahara, the fortress once bristled with gates and turrets. Most vanished after feudal rule, but moats, towering masonry and a handful of traveling buildings still reveal its scale. The walk moves from ancient discoveries at the Kōrokan through compressed gateways and steep defensive passages to the Honmaru summit. Along the way, you will see how water controlled movement, how elevation became a weapon and how relocated turrets complicate the idea of an “original” castle building. At the Tenshudai, panoramic views meet one of the site’s greatest mysteries: whether a full principal keep ever rose above the surviving foundation. The route then contrasts that uncertainty with Tamon Turret, a remarkable wooden survivor, before ending beside Ohori Park’s former defensive waters. This tour suits history lovers, architecture fans, photographers and curious walkers who enjoy reconstructing the past from clues. Uneven stones and long stairs make it an active outing, but the reward is a layered portrait of samurai power, archaeology and modern Fukuoka.

Kōrokan Museum

Unearth an ancient international gateway hidden beneath Fukuoka Castle’s grounds.

Long before samurai occupied this hill, the Kōrokan welcomed diplomats and merchants from continental Asia. Excavated foundations, soil layers and imported ceramics reveal that Fukuoka was an international gateway centuries before the Kuroda clan arrived. The in-situ displays add a fascinating archaeological layer to the castle landscape.
