White Cubes, Working Warehouses12345678910
Alserkal Avenue is often presented as Dubai’s polished art destination, but its most compelling story begins with the buildings themselves. This walk looks beyond lifestyle branding to ask how an active industrial compound became one of West Asia’s densest contemporary-art districts—and what traces of its working past remain. You will cross a former service yard, enter OMA’s shape-shifting Concrete, compare intimate commercial galleries with monumental exhibition halls, and see nonprofit institutions supporting South Asian art and photographic culture. At Grey Noise, even an apparently empty wall can become part of the experience; at Cinema Akil, the warehouse changes from white cube to collective black box. The route is ideal for architecture lovers, curious gallery newcomers, photographers and anyone interested in how culture reshapes urban space. It also reveals that Al Quoz is not simply “after industry”: repair shops, fabricators, logistics companies and delivery traffic still surround the avenue. Allow three to five hours for an unhurried visit, or choose a shorter selection of stops. Go Monday through Saturday, check exhibition changeovers beforehand and visit between November and March when the courtyards are most comfortable to explore.

Concrete

Four warehouses became an ingenious exhibition hall with shape-shifting walls.

Concrete is Alserkal’s boldest architectural experiment: four warehouses transformed by OMA into one flexible cultural building. Its enormous wall panels can slide or rotate, producing an open hall or smaller galleries. Translucent polycarbonate, dark concrete and filtered daylight ensure this white cube never feels visually neutral.
