Getsemaní’s Walls of Freedom123456789101112
Getsemaní is much more than colorful walls and evening crowds. This walk introduces the historic working-class neighborhood of artisans, sailors, market workers, and free people of African descent whose networks helped transform Cartagena’s political future. Beginning at the Clock Tower, you will cross the old boundary between colonial power and the popular suburb. Murals, oral legends, narrow streets, memorials, and domestic façades lead toward Plaza de la Trinidad, where the story of Pedro Romero, the Lanceros de Getsemaní, and the collective mobilization of November 1811 comes vividly into focus. The route then turns from heroic history toward living culture. You will encounter neighborhood devotion, changing street art, public sculpture, communal memory, and present-day questions about tourism, representation, and residents’ right to remain. Drums and dance appear as living cultural work rather than decorative entertainment. This tour is ideal for curious travelers who enjoy art, social history, and streets that reward close observation. By the waterfront bastion, colonial stone and contemporary murals meet in one unforgettable view, revealing Getsemaní as both a historic force and a community still shaping its own story.
